General Situation at 1800 UTC on Wed 22 Feb 2012

Depression over the Norwegian Sea will move rapidly eastwards over Scandinavia while a ridge of high pressure persists over southern biscay. New depression tracks east between Iceland and Shetland during Thursday afternoon.

Cape Wrath to Rattray Head including Orkney - Strong winds are forecast

24 hour forecast: West or southwest 5 or 6, backing south or southeast 3 or 4 for a time, later increasing 6 or 7 , occasionally gale 8 in north. Slight in Moray Firth, otherwise moderate, but rough becoming very rough in northwest. Rain soon. Moderate or good, occasionally poor.

Outlook:  West or southwest gale 8 or severe gale 9, but 6 or 7 at first in south, perhaps storm 10 later in northwest. Moderate or rough, but very rough or high in north perhaps very high later near Cape Wrath. Occasional rain or showers. Moderate or good, occasionally poor.

Rattray Head to Berwick upon Tweed - Strong winds are forecast

24 hour forecast: Northwest 5 in far north at first, otherwise west or southwest 5 or 6, backing south or southeast 4 for a time. Slight or moderate. Occasional rain soon. Moderate or good.

Outlook:  Southwest veering west 5 to 7, decreasing 4 for a time, perhaps increasing gale 8 later. Slight or moderate, becoming rough in far north. Rain at first. Moderate or good.

Berwick upon Tweed to Whitby - Strong winds are forecast

Channel Islands - Strong winds are forecast

24 hour forecast: Southwest 4 or 5, locally 6 north of guernsey, veering west by dawn tomorrow, decreasing 3 or 4 by midday. Moderate to rather rough, becoming slight to moderate. Rain or drizzle with coastal fog becoming extensive tomorrow. Good becoming moderate to very poor.

Outlook:  West to southwest 3 or 4. Slight to moderate with a swell. Occasional rain or drizzle with coastal fog. Moderate locally poor or very poor.
